Ghanaian youngster Eric Adu Gyamfi was named the Man of the Match following a spectacular individual performance during the Black Starlets’ opening Group D match at the 2026 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations on Thursday evening.

The highly-rated midfielder captured continental attention with an electric display at the Mohammed VI Football Academy, headlined by a sensational long-range goal that doubled Ghana's advantage in the 10th minute of play.

Picking up the ball with immense vision, Gyamfi launched a breathtaking, long-range chipped effort that completely flew past the Algerian goalkeeper, instantly becoming a strong contender for the goal of the tournament.

His masterclass earned immense praise from the Confederation of African Football (CAF), which celebrated his remarkable vision on CAF Online Instagram, marveling at how he accurately surveyed the entire pitch before unleashing his audacious strike.

Despite Gyamfi's brilliance, the Black Starlets surrendered a comfortable 2-0 halftime cushion, which began with Gavi Yao’s opening goal in the third minute of the match.

A resilient Algerian side mounted a fierce second-half comeback, equalizing via rapid goals from Adam Benali and Melwane Zaidi.

Prosper Narteh Ogum’s side even survived a major late scare when Algeria’s Ilyas Grini missed a 67th-minute penalty.

The dramatic 2-2 draw leaves both nations level with one point each in Group D.

Head Coach Ogum will now shift the squad's focus toward securing a vital victory in their next group fixture against Senegal on Sunday, May 17.
