….As safety campaign intensifies

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding access to Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and promoting safe usage across the country as it marked World LPG Day 2026 on Monday.

The event brought together key stakeholders from government and the energy sector, including representatives from the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, the Petroleum Commission, the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC), the Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors (CBOD), the Ghana LPG Industry Players Association (GLIPGOA), GOIL and other industry players.

The programme focused on reinforcing the strategic importance of LPG as a cleaner and more sustainable energy source, with discussions centred on expanding access, ensuring safety compliance, and sustaining public education.

Speaking at the event, the Chief Executive of the NPA, Godwin Kudzo Tameklo, stressed that accelerating LPG adoption in Ghana requires a comprehensive approach built on effective regulation, public education and shared responsibility across the value chain.

He noted that achieving positive safety outcomes depends not only on compliance by industry players but also on responsible consumer behaviour.

Mr Tameklo urged stakeholders to consistently “pass it forward” by promoting safe LPG usage and correcting unsafe practices within their communities.

He further reaffirmed the government’s target of achieving 50 per cent LPG access by 2030, indicating that the Authority would intensify nationwide sensitisation campaigns, stakeholder engagement and public education initiatives to strengthen the country’s safety culture and encourage greater LPG adoption.

Delivering the keynote address, the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, reiterated the government’s commitment to increasing local LPG production and expanding clean cooking interventions.

He highlighted plans to promote the use of LPG in secondary schools through the Renewable Energy Fund and emphasised that achieving Ghana’s energy transition objectives would require sustained collaboration between government, industry and consumers to ensure access to safe and affordable energy.

Industry stakeholders also called for coordinated efforts to accelerate LPG penetration nationwide, identifying affordability, infrastructure development, investment, public awareness and regulatory cooperation as critical factors for success.

Chairman of COMAC, Gabriel Kumi, advocated measures to improve affordability and expand LPG infrastructure, while the organisation’s Chief Executive Officer, Riverson Oppong, underscored the need to intensify public awareness campaigns and hasten the transition from traditional fuels to cleaner energy alternatives.

The Chief Executive Officer of CBOD, Patrick Ofori, pledged continued support from private investors and stressed the importance of policy consistency in creating an enabling environment for investment in the LPG sector.

Similarly, Chairman of GLIPGOA, Ralph Bedi, called for stronger collaboration between regulators and industry players to improve efficiency across the LPG value chain.

For her part, the Director of Gas at the NPA, Ntiwaa Kwakye, reaffirmed the Authority’s role in bringing together government institutions, regulators and industry stakeholders to drive a coordinated LPG agenda.

She said the NPA would continue to champion safety advocacy, strengthen stakeholder collaboration and support Ghana’s transition to cleaner and more sustainable energy sources.

The commemoration of World LPG Day 2026 underscored the growing recognition of LPG as a key component of Ghana’s clean energy transition and highlighted the collective efforts required to expand access while ensuring the highest standards of safety nationwide.
