World Cup 2026: Fred Pappoe explains why he is hopeful of success for Black Stars

Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Fred Pappoe, has shared reasons for his optimism about the Black Stars' chances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite the team's low FIFA ranking and recent struggles.

Speaking to Citi Sports following Ghana's drop to 74th in the latest FIFA Coca-Cola rankings, Pappoe pointed to the quality of players likely to make the final 26-man squad as a source of comfort.

"I don't have an idea as to what is going to be the final 26. But at the end of the day, if you're looking at who could possibly be in the 26, it gives me comfort. I don't think our team is necessarily bad. I do not subscribe to that," he said.

Pappoe stressed that with the right mentality and a well-structured technical approach, Ghana can defy expectations.

"Once we have the players with the right calibre of mind, the right mentality and the right approach, I'm not one who looks down on my team. I'm very hopeful with the array of players we have."

He also expressed confidence that the team will overcome its current challenges once a new head coach is appointed.

"I think we'll do well. I'm sure this is just a spot on the way. I'm sure we'll get over it, get a new coach in place."

Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama. The Black Stars will open their campaign against Panama on June 17 in Toronto, before facing England in Boston on June 23 and Croatia in Philadelphia on June 27.
